...what does Accredited Training really mean?

Accreditation is a hugely important consideration for anyone thinking about restraint training for their staff and their organisation.  Perhaps more than other knowledge and skills, Physical Intervention and Restraint carries with it the risk of serious injury or death if carried out incorrectly, inappropriately or without due consideration.

For this reason, the source of accreditation for training in Intervention and Restraint should be foremost in the minds of those commissioning a training provider.

Notably, the Department of Health, the Department for Education and Skills, the Care Commission, and other national authorities do not normally endorse any one method of restraint.  It is the responsibility of the individual manager to chose training for their staff which is demonstrably appropriate and suitable for their environment.

The provision of suitable and competent training for your staff is implied under the Health and Safety Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Managers who are looking for accredited training from professional, quality-assured trainers teaching approved restraint methods should ask 5 key questions about competency:

  1. Bullet ask about the educational accreditation and quality assurance of the course content.  What level of academic vigour and quality assurance has this course been passed through before being presented to your staff?

  2. Bullet ask about the the awarding body by whom your staff will be certificated.  What certificates will they recieve, by whom will their qualification be recognised?  What is that body’s competency to accredit physical skills training for occupational environments?

  3. Bullet ask about a technical audit which ensures that the methods of restraint being taught are appropriate and adhere to good practice.  Did a competent authority audit the techniques your staff will be using?

  4. Bullet ask about documented risk-assessments which have been carried out regarding the training.   Will the training be carried out in a safe and professional way and can the training provider prove this by showing you their documented risk assessments?

  5. Bullet ask about the qualifications held by the instructors, whether those qualifications are current, being refreshed and by what competent and suitable awarding body they have been awarded.   Are your staff being trained by skilled communicators who have up-to-date awareness of critical issues?

Importantly, if an incidence of intervention or restraint requires investigation by a court of Law, by the Health and Safety Executive or by the Care Commission, it is imperative that due care and consideration regarding the training of staff can be proven and demonstrated by the manager who holds that responsibility.  Further to that, it is important that your training provider’s competency and accreditation is clearly demonstrable.
